Ilford's young sprinters Gary Smallman and Aaron Balogun stole the show with both of them lowering their personal bests in the 100metre event. YOUNG ATHLETES - UKYAL Ashford

Ilford youngsters took part in Match 3 of the UKYAL @ Ashford. The Meeting was between hosts Ashford, Croydon Harriers, Hastings AC and Ilford. The team was able to field a reasonable side of 26 athletes, however the girls were severely under strengthen due to other commitments.

A CLUB RECORD was achieved as the meeting drew to an end. The boys u/15 4x400 Metres Relay took part in a thrilling race, the team was made up of (Bakr-Al-Akku, Osi Nzeako, Vivek Joshi & Andy Carle). Andy although struggling ran a good first leg. Vivek ran well to put the team back into 2nd place. Osi rang just over 60 sec for his leg to cement the place and Bakr ran a very impressive sub 59sec leg to come home in a triumphant mood for the team in a time of  - 4min 13.8sec.
The u/15 girls although not making a club record ran a very impressive 4x100m relay race to come home in a time of 53.4sec just 0.5sec outside their seasons best

There was a couple of other outstanding performances that shone through the bright day. In the u/15 boys Shot Putt David Hughes quitely went about his way to putt a PB of - 7metres 68cm a full 3/4 of a metre further than he has ever putt before. He has improved so well this season in his first ever year for Ilford AC. Even though some of the shot putters exceed over 10metres plus he is not diturbed or daunted by the experience. Vivek Joshi also in the u/15 boys more renowned for his throwing efforts ran a blinding 800m A String, in a strong field, to clock a time of - 2min 31.5 sec, this was a phenomenal 6 secs of his previous PB.

In the u/13 boys David Holder-Reece was making his debut and ran respectable races in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and LJ. This performance in the LJ was very good, jumping a very creditable - 3metres 42cm to finish 2nd in the B-String event. The other debutant was in the u/17 boys, Elijah Collins. He took part in the 200m, HJ & LJ. Again what a jumps man he is. He cleared a very respectful 1metre 50cm in the high jump and not to be out done in anyway leaped his way to a distance of - 5metres 15cm to win the A-String event.

The depleted u/15 girls team rallied around and performaned well, jumping over any obstacles that were in there way. Rachel Giwa and Julianna Dougan took part in the 100m
both coming home in fine style to win there respective races in the a & b string. Rachel lowered her PB to 12.8sec and Julianna equalled her PB for a time of 13.3sec. In the 200m, Rachel again exceeded herself to run yet another brilliant race for a time of 26.4 sec another PB by over 0.5sec. Sarah Kigozi also ran a PB in a time of 28.00 sec, both finishing first again.

Lydia Hall was spurred on in the u/15 girls high jump. Lydia seems to be getting a taster for this event now. Cheered on by family and fellow colleagues she was jumping well and was going for her best of 1m 35cm, this was achieved with good applause. Going for her new PB of 1m 40cm,  she just failed by a whisker to clear, this record will surely go soon.

  • Ilford AC ladies proved they are a force to be reckoned with when they took the team prize in Sunday's High Ongar 10k race  Although the very pleasant off road course, was not hilly the terrain proved to be quite testing with plenty of stony paths and potholes
Bree Nordin led the squad home in an excellent 4th place taking the womens over 45 trophy in a very respectable time of 43mins 20secs. The ladies race was won by
Wendy King in 40.07 2nd Sue Spong and 3rd Annette Musset. Other Ilford women's positions and times were:-
    8th     Nicola Hopkinson    44.59
    13th   Cheryl Macdonald    48.11
    15th   Pam Jones             48.45

The men's race was won by Bryn Reynolds from the Omega club in 35.23
with Dave Cox of Woodford Green  2nd in 3537. Ilford's improving athlete Abdi Berleen ran a personal best breaking 40 minutes for the first time clocking 39.35 for an excellent 21st place. Darren Bottrill also recorded  a pb finishing 53rd in  44.19.

Early Saturday morning at Bewl Water near Tunbridge Wells  Ilford's elite triathlete Karen Sindall easily won an Aquathon event sponsored by Urbanrace Limited . Karen competed in the novice 750m swim and 5k run event as a sharpener for her forthcoming ITU World cup event in Salford.

Recovering from a head cold Karen experienced some breathing difficulties in the swim section but nevertheless emerged from the water as leading woman some 15metres behind the male leader. Karen entered the transition area in a time of 8mins and 3 secs and then sooon went into the overall lead as she began the run.

From then on there was only one winner as the Ilford athlete sped away from the rest of the field. Unfortunately a serious marshalling error occured at the turning point and the whole field missed out a loop restricting the run to only 2.5K.

In Sunday's British 10k London Run Ilford's Keelie Brooks was amongst illustrious company in the form of the great Haile Gebrselassie. The legendary Ethiopian was the runaway winner in 28mins and 12 seconds. After making a very fast Keelie suffered at the 9k mark when a painful stitch reduced her to a walk. Yet she should not be too disappointed with her 47 minute effort as her training suggests there is plenty to come off that time.
