• Press Report 30th April 2007

Ilford AC’s triathlete Karen Sindall made a very successful return to her favoured running discipline in Sunday’s Nicola 5 mile race at Canvey on Sunday morning when defeating Orion’s Great Britain International Danielle Sale by over half a minute. Her winning time of 28 minutes and 30 seconds proved to be too much for a very strong female field as she sped through the miles unchallenged. Race-rusty Sindall had hatched a plan with her running advisor at the club to use in form veteran Terry Knightley as a pace-maker throughout and so it proved to be as Knightley finished just 3 seconds adrift in 28.33, himself just  missing out on the top veteran prize.  “I looked back a couple of times to check but couldn’t see her” confessed Sindall after the race.
Her advisor also added “We appreciate that Danielle is racing her way back after a lay-off but even fully fit would have been hard pushed to beat Karen today. We still see this result as a significant pointer to Karen’s form and is a good indication of the progress she has made in training during the winter months”.
With over 500 runners battling it out in the warm conditions of the Canvey Riviera further success came in the women 45 plus category where Dianne Crisp picked up 2nd prize with a time of 39.09. Mel Jones had a strong run and was delighted with her 35.23 clocking and Nicola Hopkinson completed the scoring in 36.47 in what was a very good team performance. Unfortunately the local club Southend AC were able to turn out a very strong squad and took the major spoils.

In the men’s race the prolific Malcolm Muir had put the hot conditions of last week's London Marathon firmly behind him and returned an impressive 27.04 for 7th position in a quality field led by Billericay’s Crispian Bloomfield. Neil Crisp hit a 31.34 and Peter Ryan, race walker turned runner, chipped in with an excellent 34.31.

Crowe and Giwa four-ge ahead – Report by Matt Maple

Fionnula Crowe and Rachel Giwa made up for lack of numbers with some outstanding wins at the first Southern Women's athletics league match at Hemel Hempstead on Saturday.  With no hope of achieving team glory, the pair both won their two races by comfortable margins, gaining valuable confidence ahead of the forthcoming athletics season.  Fionnula has been working hard on her hurdles technique with her coach Rod Smith, which she put in place faultlessly in the under 17s 300m hurdles in a time of 57.5 and the 80m hurdles in 16.8 seconds respectively.  She stated that she had "previously had concerns about her 1st and 3rd hurdle" in the longer race, but showed no sign of it and is now looking forward to the next race.  Rachel was a class act in both the 100m (12.7s) and 200m (26.5s), and won both with ease.  By the end of the bend on the 200m, she was ahead by 20m and proceeded to storm away thereafter.  She said that she will definitely get quicker with the next race as she works hard to develop her leg speed, with her coach, Craig Burrow.

Aaron Balogun ran at the UK junior league as a guest and recorded 11.1 and 22.0 for the 100metres and 200 metres respectively.
