• Davos Marathon, Havering 90 5 miles, Tour of Little Baddow

    Mountain Marathon Spelman

Ilford's athletic club's most intrepid traveller, Peter Spelman completed the tough C42 Davos Mountain Marathon in Switzerland for the second successive year in near perfect conditions.  His time of 4 hours 7 minutes was a 16 minute improvement on last year showing that Peter is in the best form of his life. He came 38th in the race overall and 5th in his age group.

Meanwhile Ilford's road running squad showed up well in the late summer evening heat of the Havering Midweek 5 miler.  Female supervet, Bree Nordin was narrowly defeated to 2nd in the vet women's race with a time of 35.23.  Sally Gillam competed well to beat the 40 minute barrier with a time of 39.31, while Joan De'Ath completed the women's team in 64th with a time of 43.58.

Heading the men's squad was veteran Terry Knightley who is continuing to find form with a time of 30.27 in 6th place.  Behind him in 8th was Matt Maple in a time of 30.44.  Andy Catton (33.14) got the better of Martin Clarke (33.53) in 16th and 17th respectively as Andy is gathering a consistent run of performances.  Completing the team was Owen Phipps 43rd with a time of 39.22 and Ray Rawlinson, 53rd in 40.40.  The men would've won the team prize in former times when such a prize existed.

Always one for a challenge, Malcolm Muir completed the arduous challenge of the Little Baddow Tour.  The tour consists of four consecutive days of tough races, made up of an 11km road race, a 4 mile cross country, a 4.5 mile hilly road race and toughest of all, two one mile time trials, once down hill, once up hill.  This was followed up by the compulsory 'non-competitive' fell race which drained the competitors of any remaining energy.  Malcolm competed well throughout to win the 4.5 mile road race and consistently place in the top 3 but ultimately had to succumb to Springfield's Paul Dobson and Chelmsford's middle distance expert, David Fewell.  Matt Maple kept Malcolm company for the final day's time trials and the post race festivities (also compulsory to avoid time penalties).
