    SCVAC Enfield
Ilford AC co hosted the first Southern Counties Vets League at the Queen Elizabeth stadium at Enfield on Monday evening. Despite being well below strength 9 athletes managed to cover the entire program even including the final event where a makeshift squad of distance men supported the one established sprinter to achieve a creditable 5th place and valuable points in the 4 x 100 relay. Bolstered by a fine win in the 2000metre walk by club stalwart Steve Uttley, the Ilford team went on to finish 3rd in the overall competition. The other notable performance of the night was the continued form of 65 year old John Batchelor who took the combined over50s and over60s 1500m by the scruff of the neck leading the race for the first lap. Batchelor and Andy Catton, running in the over 50s, had a titanic scrap on the final lap with Catton eventually having to give best to the senior man. Batchelor recorded a fine 5mins 8.06 secs for maximum points.
